Claude Pro vs Max 5x vs Max 20x: Which Plan Should You Buy?
The three plans differ in one thing that matters: how much you can use Claude before it stops you. Everything else follows from that.
What actually separates the plans
Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x give you the same Claude. The same models, the same features, the same Claude Code access. What changes is your usage allowance inside each rolling session window, and Max is sold explicitly as a multiple of Pro: five times or twenty times the usage.
So the question is never "is Max better". It is "do I hit the Pro ceiling, and how often does that cost me an hour".
Claude Pro
The right default for almost everyone. Long conversations, document analysis, writing, and everyday coding help all fit comfortably. Claude Code is included, which surprises people who assume it needs a separate purchase.
Pro runs out when you use Claude the way a heavy user does: heavy agentic Claude Code sessions across a large repository, very long documents fed in repeatedly, or several hours of continuous back and forth. If you are hitting limits more than about once a week and it genuinely interrupts your work, that is the signal to move up.
Claude Max 5x
The plan most people who outgrow Pro should buy. Five times the usage covers sustained Claude Code work through a normal working day without the session limit becoming something you plan around.
This is the sweet spot for a working developer: enough headroom that you stop rationing, without paying for capacity you will not reach.
Claude Max 20x
Built for people whose day is mostly Claude. Long autonomous Claude Code runs, large refactors, multiple parallel sessions, or professional work where waiting on a limit costs real money.
Be honest about this one. Twenty times the allowance is only worth it if you were actually exhausting five times. If you are choosing Max 20x because it sounds safest rather than because you hit the Max 5x ceiling, you are buying insurance you will not claim.
A simple way to decide
Never hit a limit? Pro, and stop thinking about it.
Hit limits occasionally, usually on big days? Still Pro. An occasional pause is cheaper than a permanent upgrade.
Hit limits most days and it interrupts real work? Max 5x.
Exhausting Max 5x, or running long agentic sessions as your main workflow? Max 20x.
Because these are gift subscriptions rather than a rolling plan you are locked into, the low-risk move is to buy one month at the tier you think you need and see whether you hit the ceiling. If you do, buy up next time. If you do not, you have not committed to a year of something oversized.
Does duration change the price per month?
Yes. Longer durations carry a lower relative service markup here, so a twelve-month gift costs less per month than twelve separate one-month gifts. The full breakdown for every plan and duration is shown on the order builder before anything is created, including exactly what Anthropic charges and what our markup is.
See buying Max with crypto for the payment side, or the Claude Code guide if that is your main use case.
