Claude Gift Subscriptions Explained
Gift subscriptions are the mechanism behind every crypto purchase of Claude. Understanding how they redeem saves a lot of confusion later.
What a gift subscription is
A Claude gift is a prepaid subscription delivered as a redeemable link on claude.ai. The buyer pays up front for a specific plan and duration. Whoever opens the link and confirms it receives that plan on their Claude account. It is a first-party Anthropic feature, not a workaround.
How redemption works
- Open the claude.ai gift link in a web browser.
- Sign in to the Claude account that should receive the plan, or create one.
- Confirm the redemption and the plan applies to that account.
Redeem on the correct account. The plan attaches to whichever account is signed in when you confirm, and that is not easily undone.
Key rules worth knowing
Gifts expire. Anthropic's current guidance gives you 365 days from purchase to redeem, which is generous but not infinite.
You can only run one at a time. Multiple gifts generally cannot be redeemed simultaneously, so buying twelve one-month gifts is not a clever way to assemble a year. Buy the twelve-month duration instead.
An app-store subscription blocks redemption. If your current plan came through the iOS or Android app store, Anthropic currently requires it to lapse before you can redeem a gift.
Nothing auto-renews. When the period ends, it ends, and no card gets charged because none was ever involved. For a lot of people that is the entire appeal.
The link is a bearer instrument. Whoever holds it can redeem it, so treat it like cash and keep it off public channels until it is on your account.
If you already have a Claude subscription
Outcomes depend on your current plan and how it was purchased. Web-billed plans may be extended, upgraded, or credited under Anthropic's current rules. App-store plans must generally lapse first. Anthropic controls all of this, so check its current gift guidance before buying if your situation is unusual.
Why this enables crypto payment
Because a gift does not have to be redeemed by its purchaser, someone can buy the official gift through normal payment channels while you pay them in cryptocurrency. You end up with a genuine Anthropic subscription on your own account. That is the whole model, explained further in this article.
