What Max actually gives you
Claude Max raises usage limits relative to Pro. Max 5x offers roughly five times Pro's usage allowance, and Max 20x roughly twenty times. The model quality is the same. You are buying headroom, not intelligence.
Anthropic sets and occasionally adjusts these limits, and they can vary with demand and model. Treat multipliers as the shape of the offer rather than a fixed guarantee.
Who should choose which
Pro covers everyday conversation and light coding without much thought. Max 5x is where you land if Claude Code is part of your working day, if you push long documents through it, or if Pro's ceiling has started interrupting you mid-task. Max 20x is for agentic runs that go for hours, large codebases, and the people whose work simply stops when a limit hits.
If you are unsure, the honest advice is to start lower. Hitting a limit occasionally is cheaper than paying for headroom you never touch.
